Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) was the preeminent French sculptor of his time, and remains one of the few sculptors widely recognized outside the visual arts community. The Thinker is Rodin's most famous bronze and marble sculpture, held in the Musée Rodin in Paris. It depicts a man in sober meditation battling with a powerful internal struggle. It is often used to represent philosophy. The Kiss is another sculpture by Rodin in marble. The embracing couple depicted in the sculpture appeared originally as part of a group of reliefs decorating Rodin's monumental bronze portal The Gates of Hell, commissioned for a planned museum of art in Paris.
